Siemens Medical Solutions today installed SOMATOM Definition™ - the world’s first dual source computed tomography (CT) system at Breach Candy Hospital thus making it the first medical institute in India to offer the most advanced CT technology in India. This state-of-the-art system was inaugurated by Dr. Erich Reinhardt, CEO and President of Siemens Medical Solutions and Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG.
With the introduction of the SOMOTOM Definition in India, Siemens Medical Solutions has launched a new era in CT imaging. SOMOTOM Definition enables advanced applications in the area of acute care, cardiology, neurology and oncology. It is the world’s first and the only system with a unique configuration of having two X-Ray sources and two sets of detectors. This unique and award winning design has helped to speed up the acquisition time for Cardiac Imaging by over 100% as compared to single source based CT scanners. Besides enabling twice the speed, the dual source has opened a new set of possibilities of CT imaging with its unique ‘Dual Energy’ mode. Around the world, leading institutes are developing and validating exciting new scanning protocols using the Dual Energy mode. Amongst the many possibilities, with dual energy, users are confident of doing tissue and fluid characterization, direct subtraction of bony structures from the images etc.,
The high-speed cardiac capability helps physicians to overcome many of the limitations of current CT scanners based on single source. Most importantly, patients need not be medicated with ‘beta blockers’ to slow down their heart rates, as the system is capable of imaging patients with heart rates of even upto 120 bpm. Patients with arrhythmic heart conditions can also be scanned for cardiac imaging without any limitations. Besides handling high heart rates, the SOMOTOM Definition has addressed the other big concern of the industry, namely, the radiation dose levels for Cardiac Scan. The SOMOTOM Definition delivers 50% lower dose as compared to current scanners. Such lower levels of dose combined with the ability to scan very high heart rates make it the preferred choice when doctors need to scan pediatric patients for studying some cardiac congenital anomalies.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Reinhardt, CEO & President of Siemens Medical Solutions and member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG said, “India is one of the top 5 healthcare markets for Siemens and we are very happy with our level of engagement in this market. We have the privilege of providing critical technologies to many leading public /private institutions in this country. We have a leading market share position in most of the segments and with such regular introductions, we will consolidate our position even further here. The users here are highly evolved and they adsorb and adapt technological evolutions very easily. Combined with the fact that India has a very high patient load, this is an exciting market for us to bring our very latest technologies in the shortest possible time so that they can be put to a variety of clinical routines.”
"That we are the first institution in India to install the World’s most advanced CT System furthers our commitment to offer the very best in diagnostics and therapy to our patients," stated Mr. K M Gherda -Chairman, Breach Candy Hospital. "Breach Candy Hospital has always strived to provide its patients with the best in terms of latest diagnosis and treatment facilities and with Somatom Definition, we can offer our patients among other tests, a more ‘Holistic’ preventive cardiac diagnosis”.
