The Gujarat earthquake of 2001 was the most devastating earthquake in India in recent history. Nearly 20,000 people were reported dead and around 166,000 people were injured. Over 600,000 people were rendered homeless. Within hours after the tragedy, our employees set out on a life-saving mission with 10 trucks of emergency supplies and a few weeks later they returned to construct 150 temporary shelters for the affected. Soon after the Immediate relief program, Siemens and its employees, with a few German companies, set up a Medical and a Social Center at the SOS Children’s village in Bhuj.
The Center now caters to residents covering 35 neighbouring villages.
