The Idea Youth Contest finale was held during the 10-day Indo-German Urban Mela at Bangalore on June 30, 2012. The contest was organized by Siemens in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, with the objective of fostering innovation and showcasing inventions by engineering students from across India.
A month prior to the competition through social media students from across India were invited to submit presentations about their futuristic inventions that addressed challenges in four areas i.e. energy, water management, urban transportation, and healthcare. Over 220 presentations were received, of which ten entries were shortlisted by Siemens Management.
At the main event, the selected groups presented concepts and prototypes to a panel of three judges comprising Prof. Dr. Venugopalan Ittekkot from the University of Bremen, Germany, Dr. Mukul Saxena, Head, Siemens Corporate Research and Technologies, India and Prof. Dr. T.G. Sitharam, Chairman, Center for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Planning (CiSTUP), IISc Bangalore. The presentations were judged according to novelty of the idea, relevance to the theme of the contest, and presentation skills.
The Idea Youth Contest concluded with the announcement of winners. The student team from RV College of Engineering, Bangalore comprising students Karthik Reddy, Pavan K and Vinod S won the contest. The group presented their idea about an automatic medical fluid infusion system using LabVIEW real-time. As winners, the group won an internship opportunity with Siemens and an all-expense paid German Language Course sponsored by the Goethe Institute.
